Featured Projects : New Recreation Center

The Town has recently broken ground on a state-of-the-art recreation center that will have facilities better than any health club membership and promises to be the envy of New Jersey.

Nearly 80 percent of the cost of the recreation center is being funded by non-tax revenues, Mayor Dennis Elwell said.

“This facility will be remarkable and its innovative financing will place nearly no burden on the property taxpayer,” Mayor Elwell said. “As we’ve done throughout my Administration, we’ve provided exceptional services, but at no increased cost to taxpayers.”

The recreation center will include an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a high-school regulation gymnasium capable of allowing two basketball games to be played simultaneously. The new pool will enable our school system to consider having a swim team at the high school. The pool will include a spectator section to allow parents to watch swim meets and lessons. Senior water aerobics are also anticipated.

The second floor of the facility will feature an indoor running track to allow walking, running and jogging exercise during inclement weather.

While plans have yet to be finalized, Mayor Elwell said he expects the Town will be able to provide fitness coordinators and 7-day-a-week operations at about one-third the cost of a typical health club membership. Tentative plans call for operations from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. to enable residents to enjoy the facility before and after work and to afford the opportunity to the school system to utilize it during the day.
